Chapter 25: The Road North

"Say another one," he said.

"The sky is green."

He listened. Nothing.

"Dulcie is a quiet, gentle girl who never gambles."

Nothing.

He started to laugh. He laughed so hard the borrowed bed shook, and he had to sit up and put his bandaged hands over his face.

Then he stopped laughing.

He sat there very still.

"What's wrong?" I said.

"I don't know how to do this," he said quietly. "Eight years. I always knew. With everyone."

"Now somebody can stand in front of me and tell me anything at all, and I'll never know."

"That's what it's like for everybody else," I said.

"I know. How do you stand it?"

I sat up beside him and pulled the blanket around both of us.

"You pick people," I said. "And then you trust them. And sometimes you're wrong."

"That's terrible."

"It is."

He looked at me for a long time.

"I pick you," he said.

"Good. I'm a very bad liar. You'll be fine."

We left for the Thornwood the next morning, the twenty-fourth day.

The old foreman came to see us off. He was moving into the kitchen of Merriwether House until spring, to keep the orchard.

He said it was only because his cottage roof leaked.

"Wind in my eye," he said when I hugged him.
