Chapter 27: The Crown

I took the lease out of his hand.

He let me. He was enjoying himself too much to stop me.

I read it twice. The seal didn't change.

"He didn't know," I said. "When he sealed this. He didn't know anything about the Thornwood except the stories."

"Doesn't matter what he knew," said the merchant. "It's sealed."

"Then we'll ask him to unseal it."

The merchant laughed so hard he nearly fell off his stool.

"Ask the prince? You? He'll be dancing at his next betrothal before he reads your letter."

I turned around to Dulcie.

"Fastest horse in the Keep," I said. "Ride for the border post and pay any rider there to take a letter to the palace. Pay what he asks."

"Out of the orchard money?"

"Out of my eleven coppers and a button, if you have to."

She was gone before I'd finished.

I sat down on a stump and wrote the letter on the back of the merchant's own ledger page, with his own pencil, while he watched.

It was four lines long.

Then I stood up.

"Nobody cuts another tree," I told his crews, "until he answers."

"Who's going to stop us?" one of the axemen said.

I walked to the nearest fir with a white chalk mark on its trunk.

I sat down with my back against it.

The steward got off his mule and sat down against the next one.
