Chapter 22: Closing Bell
Nothing happened for a long moment.
Preston leaned against the glass with his arms crossed, and the two men in gray stood behind him.
"You know what's remarkable?" he said. "You're a boy with a bicycle who read a lucky stock one afternoon, and you sat down to bet against a fund I built."
"Three fifty-eight," Dex whispered.
The line on the screen for CHALFANT hung flat at forty-one dollars and six cents.
I watched it, and I could hear my heart.
Roxy's hand tightened on my chair.
"Say something," Preston said, to the room. "Veronica, you've known him longest. Tell him how this ends."
"I think we're about to find out," Veronica said.
He laughed at that.
Then a number on a different screen ticked down by a cent, and he stopped laughing.
One of the men in gray took out a phone and walked toward the window with it at his ear.
"Three fifty-nine."
The stock ticked down again, and then again.
Preston's eyes went from the screen to his watch, and back.
At 3:59 and thirty seconds, the price fell by a dollar in a single flick, and a murmur ran out through the glass wall across the open floor.
