Chapter 6: Your Word at the Wedding

Ezra opened the door and walked out first.

"Sure," he said. "Let's walk."

I stood with my back against the sink until their footsteps went down the hall and the front door shut.

Then I washed my hands again, fixed my hair, and counted to thirty.

My knees would not stop shaking.

The dining room was empty except for my mother, who was stacking plates.

"Where did the boys go?"

"Outside," I said. "Let me help."

"Sit, sit. Take a plate of leftovers home. I wrapped the roast."

I took the foil package from her hands and went to the front room.

The big window beside the porch was open an inch for the heat.

I stood beside the curtain with the package against my chest.

Judd's voice came first, low and tight.

"I saw you follow her down the hall."

"I went to find a charger," Ezra said.

"You went into a locked bathroom behind my sister."

"She wasn't well. I'm her attending, Judd. She nearly fainted at the table. I checked on her."

"Don't." My brother's voice cracked. "Don't do that to me. I've known you since we were eighteen."

Ezra said nothing.

"You haven't looked at her once all night," Judd went on.

"I thought, good. That's how it should be. Then I see you follow her down the hall like..."

"Like what?"

"Like you did at the wedding."

My skin went cold.

What about the wedding?
