Chapter 19: The Semifinal
Thurston's box sat on the visitors' side of Lakeshore Park, glass on three walls and heat blowing from the ceiling.
He had put a bowl of olives on the table and a chair at the window for me.
"Sit, my dear.
"You'll see him better from here."
I sat.
Eight of his guests stood around with glasses, men in good coats who laughed a half beat after he did.
My phone lay in the inside pocket of my jacket, the recorder running.
Cade had put it there that morning with his thumb on my collarbone and said, "Let him talk."
Down on the grass, the Ironhorse ran out in red and black to a roar I felt in my teeth.
Number eight carried the ball at the first scrum and the referee's whistle shrilled before he had gone two yards.
"Offside, Ironhorse," the announcer said. "Penalty, Cromwell."
