Chapter 20: After the Whistle

I picked up my own phone and took a photograph of the message before Thurston's hand closed over his.

It was a clumsy shot, tilted and half a thumb, and I knew from the click that it would be enough.

He looked at me.

I looked at the olive in my fingers.

"I'm hungry," I said.

He slid his phone into his coat pocket and smiled the soft smile that frightened people.

"Of course you are."

Down on the grass the whistle blew for the seventy-eighth minute, and the Ironhorse were still down by five.

Cade had played the whole half with his right hand pressed to his side.

He hadn't missed a tackle, though the referee had punished him for three, and he was white with pain under the lights.

At the eightieth minute the Ironhorse got the ball on the Cromwell line.

The pack drove.

Cade went in at the bottom of it.

For two seconds nobody could see anything.

Then the referee's arm went up, straight and unwilling, and the stadium exploded.

"Try," the announcer screamed. "Ironhorse try!"
