Chapter 23: The Dinner

The league dinner was held in a ballroom bigger than the one I'd walked into in a wedding dress.

Eight hundred people sat at round tables under chandeliers.

League officials, club owners, sponsors and every camera in the city filled the room.

I wore a green silk dress Marlo had bought with her own money.

Cade wore a black tuxedo that did nothing to hide the way he sat, stiff, careful and grinning.

Mavis sat on his other side, gripping her cane.

Trent sat at the back by the kitchen doors in a borrowed jacket, pale as a candle.

At the head table, between the league commissioner and the head of Harlan Foods, sat Thurston Cromwell in a silver tie and fresh gloves.

"He looks happy," Marlo whispered.

"He should enjoy it."

The commissioner stood and tapped the microphone.

"It is my pleasure to present the Sportsman of the Year award," he said.

"It goes to a man who has done more for rugby in this city than any other."

Applause rolled through the room.

Thurston rose and buttoned his jacket.

He walked to the stage, accepting handshakes, and the room stood for him.
