"Tell him not to leave," I said into the phone. "I'm coming now."
Leon was already pulling on his shirt.
He did not ask whether I wanted him to drive.
He found his keys, held my coat open for me, and we were in the elevator before I had finished my sentence to my neighbor.
"You don't have to come in," I said.
"I know."
"You're on probation."
"I'll sit in the car and think about it."
German Village was quiet at seven on a Sunday, with frost on the brick sidewalks.
A man in a grey suit stood on my porch holding a cream envelope in both hands.
He looked like a person who had waited a very long time for a particular morning.
Behind my screen door, Junie stood in her pajamas with my neighbor's cardigan around her shoulders.
"Ms. Kettering?" the man said. "I'll need identification and a signature."
I gave him my license.
He checked it twice, then turned the envelope so I could see the front.
