Chapter 14: Albert Comes To Dinner
I walked down the block in my slippers and knocked on the window of my father's truck.
He rolled it down with the hand crank.
He had not shaved, and his store vest was buttoned wrong.
"Dad. How long have you been here?"
"Since four. I didn't want to wake the baby."
"You could have rung the bell."
"I haven't earned the bell," he said.
He looked at the cream envelope in my hand, and then he looked at his own knuckles.
"Is that from Mother?"
"Yes."
"Does it say what I think it says?"
"It says Mom was named executor, and that Grandma knew."
My father closed his eyes.
"I did," he said. "Geraldine cried for three days. She said it would look like we weren't trusted."
He opened his eyes.
"I'm not coming in. I'd like to ask for dinner, though. Tonight, if you'll have me."
"Six o'clock."
"Should I bring anything?"
"Yourself," I said. "And whatever you came to say."
He came at six with a paper grocery bag and wearing a clean shirt.
Junie opened the door before I could, still holding a spatula.
