Chapter 21: The Recording
Hester held the bear by its one ear while I worked the seam open with her sewing scissors.
"Gently," she said. "He has had a hard year."
The drive was no bigger than my thumbnail.
It lay in my palm, black and scratched, with a strip of masking tape that said PLAY ME.
Garret plugged it into his laptop on the kitchen table, beside the hot plate and the sugar bowl.
There was one file.
It was forty seconds of a crackle, and then a door closing, and then Desmond.
I knew his voice the way you know your own handwriting.
"Sit down. Not there, the leather."
"I'd rather stand," said a second voice.
It was the old lawyer, thinner than I had ever heard him.
"Halvorsen's out," Desmond said. "I have a man in the Caymans."
"He signs Wednesday the first, ten o'clock, he wires, and the trust shares are his."
"The child has to assent. She's seven."
"She'll sign anything with a sticker on it."
