Chapter 17: Handbag
Bom read the line on the stone three times.
The bottle had gone into the rock, and her left hand was shaking at her side.
Every night for twenty months Yook's medicine had gone down her throat, and every month her lance had come up shorter.
She had thanked him for it at her hospital bed.
She had thanked him again in the bridal suite, the night he made her a bidder instead of letting her go.
She was sitting in the grass and didn't remember sitting down.
The grass was stiff with frost at the tips, and it crackled under her palm.
Gyu-ho crouched in front of her with his forearms on his knees and didn't touch her.
He coughed into his shoulder, a dry winter cough he seemed used to.
He was thinner than in November.
His trousers were held up with a twist of grass rope, and his wrists stuck out of his shirt cuffs.
She had never once asked what he ate in here.
"The twins," she said. "There are forty-one names on Yook's list."
"I know," Gyu-ho said.
Forty-one people were drinking it tonight, a double dose, and she had handed the twins their first bottles herself.
He had a farmer's face, plain and worried, with the chipped tooth showing because his mouth was open.
"If your grandmother gets out of that building," she said, "is his deal still on?"
"The deal was her," Gyu-ho said.
"Then I'll get her out."
He went to the vines by the house and came back with a tomato, cold from the dusk.
"Eat it here," he said. "You've got a drive."
She ate it in four bites, and the tiredness ran out of her legs at once.
Her hand went on shaking.
So his food could mend a tired body and a torn arm, and it could not undo the cordial she kept drinking.
That part was hers to stop.
Ice had crept out from both banks of the stream and left a thin black channel down the middle.
