Chapter 18: Take It

Tobias looked at the capsule on the nightstand, and then at her.

"You wouldn't," he said.

"I did it before."

"That's not an answer."

"It's the only one I have."

She sat on the bed in front of him, close enough that their knees touched.

Her hands were shaking again, and she let them.

"You think I'm doing this because you're dying," she said. "That I'm sorry for you."

He said nothing.

His jaw had gone tight, and she saw that she was right.

"Eight months ago you were in my kitchen, burning toast, and singing the wrong words to a song," she said. "I looked at you and thought, there's the whole rest of my life."

"I didn't know you'd be sick. I didn't care."

"You think I'd be better off alone."

"You'd be free," he said quietly. "No pill. No schedule. No watching me cough into a towel."

"I was free."

Her voice cracked.

"I was free for seven years. I had four ships and nobody could say no to me, and it was the loneliest thing that ever happened to a person."

"I sat in your cabin and talked to your coat."

Tobias's eyes closed.

"Every dose I gave you was a day I got to hear you say my name," she said. "I'm not sorry for you. I'm greedy. I want every day you've got."

For a long moment the only sound was the creak of the ship.

Then he opened his eyes and picked up the capsule.

He did not look away from her while he put it on his tongue.

He drank the whole glass of water.

She watched his throat move, and something in her chest let go.

"There," he said, and his voice was rough. "Happy?"

"Yes."

"You're crying again."
