Chapter 22: The Trader's Price

They talked in the dining room, at the long table, with the doors open and the axe on the wall behind Lois's chair.

The trader sat alone on one side with his hat on his knee.

On the other sat the council: Lois, Celia, the captain, the old woman in green, and five others picked by lot that morning.

Veda sat at the very end, as the infirmary's nurse, and spoke only when Lois looked at her.

"Call me the trader," he said. "I'm the man who nearly did something terrible."

Lois narrowed her eyes.

"Go on."

"I run the supply boats for a settlement on high ground, across the water. About two thousand people. We lost our medical stores a month ago in a storm."

"Your own captain sent me to buy a ship's worth of sick people, because he had a theory the old ones carried immunity."

"A theory," said Celia, flatly.

"A bad one. I never believed it. I was buying time." He turned his hat. "Then I watched forty strangers stand up in deck chairs and tell the man selling them to go to hell."

"That's not how I remember it," said the old woman.

"It's how it looked from the launch."

Lois leaned back.

"What do you want?"

"A route," said the trader. He did not look at Veda. "Our charts have gone wrong. Twice we've lost boats to the big ones, and we can't tell when they come."
