Chapter 18: The Snow Hut

The storm sat on the valley for three days.

The Velde men were taken into the women's houses, two and three to a hearth, and fed with their own grain.

Lotte went to the healer's house to sleep beside the women she had lived with for a year.

Anke and I had the old prince's room, because nobody else would sleep in it.

On the third night the wind dropped a little.

I had built up the fire, and Anke sat on the furs in front of it with her knees drawn up, staring into it.

She had barely spoken since the gap closed.

"I want to tell you something," she said. "And I don't want you to be kind about it."

"All right."

"That night in August, I came in through the study window."

"He was at the desk writing. I had the knife in my sleeve. I'd been carrying it for five months."

She held her palms toward the fire, which they never were.

"He looked up and saw me, and he didn't shout. He just looked."

"So I did it fast, before I could think."

I waited.

"He didn't fight me," she said. "He put his hand over mine on the knife, and he said one thing."
