Chapter 25: The Cells Under Kronhal

Anke's POV

"The king has sent for your lord," Mechthild Sturm said through the bars. "Midsummer Eve. Alone."

She had a lamp in one hand and her little book in the other.

"I thought you'd like to know he's coming."

I was sitting on the straw with my back against the wall and my chained hands in my lap.

"Why would I like that?"

"Because then you'll know he tried."

She smiled her small, kind smile and went away up the passage.

The cells were under the Finders' house in Kronhal, three long stone vaults below the street.

Water ran down the walls.

The light came from one grate high up in each vault, where the boots of the city went past all day.

There were thirty-four of us in mine.

There were a hundred and six in all three.

The women passed the count from vault to vault through the drains, one knock at a time.

Every one of us was for Midsummer.

The youngest in my vault was a fisherman's daughter of eighteen who could call fish to her hand.

The oldest was a grandmother from the river marshes who could make a cut close by looking at it.
