Chapter 32: Over the Pass

I took my hand out of my pocket and opened it.

My mother's ruby lay in my palm, catching the lamplight from the forge yard window.

Anke looked at it.

Then she looked at me, and her mouth fell open.

"How long have you had that in there?"

"Since Midsummer."

"Two months?" She stared at me. "You've been walking around with that in your pocket for two months?"

"I tried four times."

"And?"

"You kept talking about iron."

She put her face in her hands and laughed until the anvil shook under us.

"That's a yes," I said. "Isn't it? In the hills, that's how they say yes."

"That's a yes, you idiot."

She held out her right hand.

I put the ring on it.

It was the ring that had bought her off a pyre in Velde's square, a year ago.

She turned it in the light.

"I'm wearing my own price," she said.

"You were never worth two hundred marks," I said. "You were worth a ruby."

"I was worth forty thousand, I'll have you know." She leaned her shoulder against mine. "Plus two hundred and eleven."

We were married on the first day of October, in Velde's square, by the old stone well.
