Chapter 22: The East Wing
"Leave the lamps lit," Mio said.
Caspian stopped with his hand on the wick.
The east wing room was the best guest chamber in the Sevrin house, all cream and gold, with a bed the size of a boat.
Verena had had it aired and made up that afternoon, and had pinned a note to the pillow.
Your sentence begins here. Do not waste it. V.
The door stood wide open behind them.
For five weeks they had kissed in cloakrooms, locked doors, and cold stone towers, with an ear for every footstep.
Tonight the cook had nodded to them on the stairs, and the footman had held the door, and nobody had looked at the wall.
"Shut it?" Caspian asked.
"No," she said. "Let them hear. Let them know."
His grey eyes went dark.
"Come here, then."
She went.
He took her face in both hands, and for a long moment he only looked.
Her cheeks were flushed.
She had a smudge of soot on her nose from the carriage, and a freckle under her left eye, and tears standing in the grey-green.
"I want to see you," he said. "All of you. In the light, with nothing hidden."
"Yes."
"Take off my coat."
She slid the black coat from his shoulders, and the silver wolf at the collar caught the lamplight.
She undid the buttons of his shirt, one at a time.
He let her.
His chest was hard and pale, with old scars across the ribs, and she put her mouth on each one.
"Twenty-seven years," she murmured against his skin.
"What of them?"
"You've done nothing but guard people."
"And now?"
"Now you let somebody guard you."
His breath caught.
He undressed her slowly, just as slowly, with his hands unhurried on her buttons and her laces.
He knelt to roll down her stockings, and kissed the inside of each knee.
