Chapter 24: The Wedding
The study door shut on the noise of the wedding breakfast, and the Marchioness of Sevrin was lifted onto her husband's desk.
"Caspian," Mio said, laughing. "The guests."
"Are eating my sister's cake and drinking the Queen's wine."
"They will notice."
"Let them."
His voice was low and dark, and he held her by the waist with both big hands.
Her ivory silk spilled over the blotter and the inkwell.
She was twenty-two, and for the first time in her life she wore a veil, pinned in her black hair with a silver comb.
He lifted it off, carefully, and laid it on the chair.
Then he put his hands on her knees.
"Do you remember this desk?"
"You said 'Good.'" She shivered. "It was the only word you gave me."
"I have more now."
His hands slid up under the heavy silk, over her stockings, over the lace garters, and stopped at her bare thighs.
"Good," Caspian said, slowly. "Good, my wife."
The word wife went through her.
She leaned back on her palms.
"Tell me the rest of it."
"You are good to every living thing that has ever come near you."
"You are good at sums, and in a fight, and in a lie when you have to be."
"You are good with your hands on a wrench and on me."
His fingers parted her, and found her already soaked, and he made a low sound of satisfaction.
"You are so good when you are wet like this for me, and I did nothing yet but look."
He pushed two fingers inside.
She gasped, and her heels dug into the desk.
"There she is. There is my wife. Keep still, and let me."
He knelt.
He lifted the silk over his head, and she felt his breath on her, and then his mouth.
She cried out and buried her hand in his hair through the cloth.
His tongue was patient and hot and certain.
It circled and pressed and slid, and the fingers inside her curled in time, and she heard herself babbling.
"Yes, yes, yes, right there."
"Good girl," he murmured, from under the skirts. "Come on my mouth. Show me."
She came with a long, shuddering cry that rang off the bookshelves, and she did not muffle it.
