Chapter 7: His Bed

The Queen's guards walked Verena home at midnight and posted four men outside her door.

The Queen had said only one thing to the Marquess of Sevrin in front of the court: "You will investigate this yourself, Commander. Quickly."

Caspian had spent an hour giving orders in a flat voice.

Then he had gone upstairs to his room without a word.

Mio followed ten minutes later with a candle and a tray of hot milk, because Verena had asked her to.

Caspian's bedroom was dark and enormous, with a black bed and a banked fire.

He sat on the edge of the mattress in his shirtsleeves with his elbows on his knees and his face in his hands.

She set the tray down.

"My lord."

He lifted his head, and she saw that he had not been crying, but it was a near thing.

His grey eyes were red-rimmed, flat with fury.

"I should arrest you," Caspian said.

The candle shook.

"Your handwriting is the neatest in this house."

"You were in the cloakroom tonight, with your hands in the Saint's cloak."

"Tell me what you were looking for."

"No."

"I am ordered to bring in whoever wrote that letter by the Midwinter Trial."

"Or my sister goes to the gallows in their place."

His voice was very quiet.

"The best evidence I have is you."

Her mouth went dry.

"Then do it," Mio said. "Arrest me."

He stared.

"I mean it. If you think I wrote it, put me in irons."

She walked to him and stood between his knees.

"But if you are going to do that, do it after."

"After what?"

"After tonight."

Something broke in his face.

He caught her by the waist and pulled her against him.

He pressed his forehead into her stomach, and a shudder went through his whole body.

"I do not want to be the Commander tonight," he said into her apron. "I want to be nobody."

"Then be nobody."

She put her hands in his short pale hair.

"Be mine."
