Chapter 11: Twelve Years
Nobody answered Sloane.
She came down the last two stairs and stood in the hall with her bare feet on the polished boards.
"Mom," she said. "Twelve years of tea?"
"Baby, you don't understand what you're looking at."
"It has my name on it." Sloane pointed at the notebook in the pastor's wife's hands. "I mean, the S. in it. That's me. It says what I did on each day. You wrote down what I did."
"I wrote it down so we could help you."
"Callie's name is in every line."
My mother looked at me, and the sorrow in her face turned into something thin and hard.
"Do you see what you've done?" she said to me. "You've upset her. She was doing so well."
"She was doing well in a hotel with no tea," I said.
Sloane flinched at that, and I saw her do the arithmetic.
"I've been fine since Friday night," she said. "I haven't had one bad hour."
"That's the illness settling," Dale put in. "That's normal, it comes in waves."
"Be quiet, Dale," Sloane said.
I had never heard her say it.
She had a very soft voice, and for the first time it was not soft.
She crossed the front hall and stopped in the arch of the front room, looking at the sofa and the teacups and the fourteen women.
She looked at my mother.
"You told me I was sick," she said. "You said every doctor agreed. You said if anyone found out how sick I was, they'd put me in a state home with locked doors."
"That's true, Sloane."
"I was eleven when you brought me here. I had one bag." Her voice shook. "You told me I was lucky. You said no one else would ever have kept me."
"No one else would have," my mother said.
It slipped out of her, flat and clear, and the whole room heard it.
