Chapter 25: Copper
Sloane took the oath with her right hand up and her left hand holding the rail.
Her voice did not shake.
My mother watched her from the defense table with a patient, loving face, and I knew that face better than my own.
The defense lawyer stood and buttoned his jacket.
"Miss Haldane, did you sign a statement last month?"
"I did."
"Tell the jury what it says."
"It says I put the tablets in my own tea." Sloane said it to the back wall. "It says I took them from the bathroom cabinet, and my mother never knew what was in the cup."
"Is it true?"
Sloane's eyes went to my mother.
My mother gave her the smallest nod, the one she used to give Sloane at church before a hymn.
"Yes," Sloane said.
"And the night of the knife?"
"I held it."
"You believed you were going into your sister's room."
"Yes."
"No further questions."
He sat down looking satisfied, and I felt Everett's hand close hard around my knee.
The prosecutor took her time getting up.
She walked to the stand, not the lectern, and stopped a few feet from Sloane.
"Miss Haldane, what does the tea taste like?"
The lawyer's head came up.
"Objection. Relevance."
"I'll tie it in, Your Honor."
"Briefly," said the judge.
"Copper," Sloane said.
"How long after the cup do you feel it?"
"Ten minutes."
"Who made the tea when you were eleven?"
"Mom."
"And at fifteen? And at twenty?"
"Mom."
"Who carried it up?"
"Mom."
"And who stood in the doorway until the cup was empty?"
