Chapter 31: The Empty West Room

Sloane's hearing was over before lunch.

She stood at the defense table in the gray dress, next to a public defender she had finally agreed to.

I sat directly behind her with Everett.

The prosecutor rose first.

"Your Honor, the State has reviewed the trial of Maureen Haldane."

"And?"

"Miss Haldane was given a stimulant in her tea for twelve years. She did not know it, and she was told when to act and where."

"And the State's position?"

"We move to dismiss the assault charge with prejudice."

The judge looked at Sloane for a while.

"Miss Haldane, you held the knife."

"Yes, Your Honor."

"Do you understand why the State is not asking me to punish you for it?"

"Because it wasn't me," Sloane said. "It was her. But I still held it."

"That is the correct answer, and it is not the one the law requires of you." The judge made a note. "The charge is dismissed. I'm ordering twelve months of outpatient care, and I'm told you have a place to live."

"I have a room," Sloane said. "With a key."

"Then we're done."

She turned around, and her face was wet.

I stood up and put my arms around her, and she held on to my coat in both hands.

Dale pleaded to accessory two days later, and the judge gave him eighteen months, with a note on his file that he had come forward.
