Chapter 32: Plain Tea
We decided about the letter at the maple table, with the envelope lying between the salt and the bread.
Everett sat at one end and Sloane sat at the other.
I picked it up, turned it over, and looked at the slant of my mother's hand across the front.
"Do you want to know what it says?" I asked.
"Part of me does," Sloane said. "Part of me thinks it says I'm a good girl."
"Then which part do you want in this house?"
She looked at the envelope for a long time.
"Neither," she said.
I took a pen from the jar by the phone and wrote across the front in block capitals: REFUSED. RETURN TO SENDER.
Sloane read it and nodded.
We walked it to the mailbox at the end of the drive in our coats, all three of us, in the cold dark.
She put it in herself.
She lifted the little red flag, and the three of us stood there until a car passed on the road and the headlights went over us.
"I thought I'd feel something," Sloane said.
"What do you feel?"
"Hungry."
Everett laughed, and Sloane looked startled at herself, and then she laughed too.
We ate leftover lasagna standing at the counter, and she told us what she wanted to do at the clinic's art program, and Everett asked a real question about it.
