Chapter 7: Let Her Out

We left Hester's hut by the back door with a lantern shuttered and two sacks of bread.

The clerk drove the pony cart himself.

"I'll take the riders south, to the Aldermere road," he said. "I'll tell them I saw you heading for the sea."

"They'll know you lied," Hester said.

"By then you'll be over the ridge." His hands were shaking on the reins. "I signed that book every week for eleven years, and nobody ever asked me for anything but a signature."

I put my hand on his sleeve.

"Thank you."

"I'm not brave," he said. "I just can't unsee that boy breathing."

He turned the cart onto the road and left us at the crossroads, with the moor spread dark on every side and the ridge rising dark to the north.

Hester pointed with her cane.

"There's a pass above the Greyback quarry."

"How long a climb?"

"Two hours, and then it's downhill all the way to the capital road. Can you shift?"

"I don't know."

I put my hand on my chest.

My wolf was down there somewhere, still and cold.

"She's quiet."

"The silver's sitting on her. Don't push."

We had walked a quarter mile when the whistle came.

It was thin and high, from the road behind us.

Then we heard horses.

"They're early," Hester said.

"The clerk said the south road."

"One of them didn't go south."
