Chapter 19: Sisters

Nino opened his mouth and nothing came out.

"Roisin," he said at last. "I didn't know what it was. Mama said it was a tonic."

"You watched me drink it."

"I thought it was vitamins."

"You thought it was vitamins," my sister said, "and you let me bleed on a bathroom floor, and you slept on the couch."

The old capo walked up to Nino, calmly, and held out his hand.

Nino looked at it for a moment.

Then he put the pistol in the old man's palm.

"Go home, boy," the old capo said. "Go to your mother's, and sit in the kitchen, and wait for someone to tell you what you are."

"Thank you."

"Go home. Both of you."

He looked at Roisin.

"Both of you," he said, more gently.

We took her to Fort Lee.

It was two in the morning when I sat her down on a stool in my kitchen.

I reached for the kettle, and then I stopped and put it back.

Roisin laughed, once, a little hysterical.

"Water," she said. "Just water. I'd like to have water."

I ran her a glass.

Dominic had stayed in the hall.

He caught my eye over her head and tapped the doorframe once.
