Chapter 6: On the Doorstep

The doorbell rang at six in the morning, and it kept ringing.

I woke up in Dominic's bed with his arm heavy across my waist.

He was already awake, looking at the ceiling.

"Stay here," he said.

"No."

I found his white shirt on the floor, pulled it on, and rolled up the sleeves.

It came to my knees.

He watched me button it with an expression I couldn't read.

"Fiona."

"It's my door too," I said. "Two years, remember?"

I went down the stairs barefoot and opened it.

Nino Brancato stood on the porch in a camel overcoat with a capo on each side of him.

Behind them a black Mercedes sat at the curb, with the engine running and the driver pretending not to look.

I recognized both capos.

One was the old man from the Teamsters table, with a heavy gold watch. The other was young and square-faced, and he held a paper cup of coffee that he did not seem to know what to do with.

Nino looked at me, at the shirt, and at my bare legs.

I watched his smile come up, and slip, and come up again.

"Morning," he said. "Did I wake you?"

"You did."

"I thought we should talk. Alone, if your husband doesn't mind."

"He minds."

Nino laughed.

"Fiona. Come on. Roisin is a mistake. She's young, and she's dramatic, and I let her talk me into it." He lowered his voice, as if the two men behind him couldn't hear. "I can have the contracts voided. The old man will grumble, but he'll do it. All you have to do is ask."

I looked at him.

I thought about the nine years I had spent with this man.

I thought about the nights I had waited up, and how he had slept beside me with his back turned, and how I had held a baby's tiny sock in my hand at four in the morning while he snored.

I waited to feel something.

All I felt was a mild embarrassment, that I had ever been this man's wife.
