Chapter 4: The Trustee

On Thursday morning I walked into the boardroom with a plain folder and nothing in it.

Eight directors sat around my father's old table. Desmond sat at the head of it, in my father's chair.

Jocelyn sat at his right hand with a legal pad, as she had at every board meeting for six years.

I had screenshotted the Archive thread the night before and sent it to an email account Desmond had never heard of.

I had sat on my side of the bed until two in the morning, deciding what to do with it.

"Patrick Rask holds your father's shares through the family trust, Natalie."

Desmond smiled at me.

"He has never come to a meeting. I asked him to attend today, since you've had such a hard week."

The man looked up.

He was about my age, broad through the shoulders, with dark eyes and grey coming in at his temples.

He did not look at Desmond.

He looked at me, and he kept looking, and I felt it all the way across the table.
