Chapter 15: The Doctor

Calla's POV

The cannery on the pier road had been shut for ten years.

One window on its north side was broken, and through it I could hear four minds.

I crouched behind a stack of crab traps with Ronan beside me and Wynn at the corner of the loading dock.

"Four inside," I whispered. "One is awake and bored. Two are playing cards."

"And the doctor?"

"He's tied to a chair on the far side of the floor. He's thinking about his wife."

Ronan's hand closed gently around the back of my neck.

I heard him then, steady and close in my head.

If she is hurt I will not be able to be quiet.

"I'm not going in," I said. "I'm only the ears."

"That's what I'm afraid of."

"Ronan."

"Left side of the door, then. Then you stay behind the crates until I call you."

I told him where each of them sat.

He went through the loading door fast and low.

I heard the first man's thought turn to blank terror, and then the second, and then a crash of chairs and a long dull noise, and Wynn went in behind him with a snarl.

It was over before I had counted to forty.

I went in, past two wolves on the concrete and a third holding his arm and saying, "Don't, don't, I'm done."

The doctor was grey in the face, with a split lip.

I cut the cord at his wrists with Ronan's knife.

"They told me I'd have an accident on the road tonight," he said. His voice shook. "They were going to drive me to the bridge."

"You're coming home with us," I said. "You'll sleep at Cinder Ridge."
