Chapter 18: The Cove

The guard holding my arm was thinking that Dorian had promised him a boat.

I stamped on his instep, hard, and drove my elbow back into his ribs.

He let go with a grunt.

I was through the side door before he could straighten.

The beach below the boathouse is a long curve of grey stones, and at the far end of it sits the Moon Cove, where I had said yes to Ronan.

Dorian was already halfway there.

He had Lyra by the wrist and eight men in blue armbands around him, walking fast.

The first shot cracked off the rack where his head had been.

Dorian turned at the water's edge and looked at me.

"There she is," he said, quite calmly. "My wife's wonderful sister."

He still had Lyra's wrist, and she was pulling against him with both hands.

"Let her go," I said.

"You'd like that. Everyone would like that. But I think I'll keep the Merrow daughters where I can see them."
