Chapter 6: Who Is Dani

I called her four times from the studio stairwell, and she did not pick up.

I texted: "Where are you?"

She did not answer that either.

At ten I told Gabe I was going to bed early.

At midnight I was still lying in the dark with the duck glowing green on the ceiling.

At two, someone knocked softly on our door.

I was across the room in three steps.

Erin stood in the hall in her hooded sweatshirt, with her bag over one shoulder and her hair stuck to her wet face.

"I took the last bus," she said. "I didn't know where else to go."

"Come in."

Gabe sat up in bed with his glasses crooked and his hair flat on one side.

"I'm asleep," he announced. "I'm a rock. I have never heard of you."

"Gabe," I said.

"I'm a rock who is giving up his bed." He climbed out, dragged his pillow to the floor, and pointed at the mattress. "Sleep, stranger. The sheets are clean. Mostly."

Erin almost laughed.

She sat on the edge of his bed and pulled off her wet sneakers, and I saw that her socks had holes.

"I'll be in the hall," I said.

"Stay."

"I'll be right outside, Erin."

I closed the door and sat on the carpet in the corridor with my back against it.

Half an hour passed.

Then the door opened and she slid down beside me in a blanket she had taken from the bed, her knees pulled up.

"Gabe's snoring," she said.

"He does that."

"He's sweet."

"He's very loud about it."

She smiled a little, and then it fell off her face.
