Chapter 12: Then the Car Came Back

Jenna cried for the first ten minutes of the hearing, and she was very good at it.

The dean's office had been rearranged for it.

The dean at her desk, with a recorder and a legal pad.

Two chairs on one side for Jenna and Brock.

One chair on the other side for me.

A fourth chair against the wall, empty, for the witnesses to wait their turn.

Jenna wore a cream cardigan with the sling over it, and no makeup, and her hair in a soft braid.

She looked about fifteen.

She was twenty-two.

"She told me she'd make sure I never worked in Connecticut again," she said, dabbing her eyes.

"Her father owns half the hotels in the state. She can do it."

That was new.

She'd added it since Monday.

"Thank you, Miss Cobbett," the dean said. "Mr. Pollard?"

Brock had worn a tie.

He sat forward with his elbows on his knees, earnest and sorrowful, the class president who'd seen too much.

"I drove Jenna to urgent care after," he said. "I took the photos of the bruise myself, in their bathroom."

"She didn't want to report it. I made her."

He glanced at me, sorrowful. "Somebody had to."

He looked at me as he said it, with wet, kind eyes.

I looked back at him and thought about the ring box.

"Thank you," the dean said. "The complainant has one more witness."

She checked her list.

"Mr. Kincannon."

The door opened.

Wyatt came in wearing a dark suit, and the room changed temperature.

He didn't look at me.

He sat down in the witness chair across from the dean, and Jenna turned toward him with a grateful little smile.

"Mr. Kincannon," the dean said, "Miss Cobbett says you saw Miss Townsend threaten her."
