Chapter 14: The Waiting Room

"Where is she?" I said.

Brock blinked.

He'd expected me to cry, or go white, or run to find Wyatt and scream at him.

"Health center," he said. "She has an appointment at four. I'm meeting her there, because somebody has to be decent about this."

"Good," I said. "So am I."

I walked away from him while he was still smiling.

I texted Wyatt from the middle of the quad.

"Health center. Right now. Don't ask, just come."

He wrote back in under ten seconds.

"Are you hurt?"

"No. Come anyway."

He was on the front steps of the health center before I was, out of breath, his suit jacket over his arm.

He'd run.

"What happened?"

Then he held up his own phone before I could answer.

It was a screenshot from the senior class group chat, already forwarded twice.

"congrats to Kincannon on the baby i guess??"

Brock hadn't even waited an hour.

He stared at me over the screen.

Then something I didn't expect crossed his face.

Not anger.

Fear.

He was looking at me.

"Annabel," he said carefully. "I have never..."

"I know," I said. "Come on."

I pulled the door open and walked in.

The waiting room was small and bright, with blue plastic chairs and a rack of pamphlets about sleep.

Maybe fifteen people were waiting.

A guy with a wrapped ankle.

Two girls sharing earbuds.

A nurse behind a glass window with a clipboard.

Jenna was in the corner chair with her knees together and both hands over her stomach.

Brock had beaten us there by thirty seconds.

He was crouched beside her chair with his hand on her back, the picture of a loyal friend.

Jenna saw Wyatt in the doorway and went the color of paper.

"Hi, Jenna," I said.

Every head in the room came up.

"Brock tells me congratulations are in order," I said. "And that Wyatt's the father."
