Chapter 8: The Fitting

The next morning, Gabriel stood outside the dressing room while I put on the maid of honor's dress.

He had chosen it himself. It was dark green satin with a low back, and it had no straps.

The seamstress, a small woman with pins in her mouth, left me alone to wrestle the zipper.

It stuck at my ribs.

Through the curtain, I could hear Rosalind in the next room, laughing with the owner.

"Ten weeks," she was saying. "Ten weeks from the day we met to the proposal. Gabe doesn't waste time."

I pulled at the zipper again. It would not move.

The curtain slid open.

Gabriel stepped in and drew it shut behind him.

"Don't," I said.

"The seamstress is busy." His voice was low. "Turn around."

I turned around and faced the mirror.

His hands settled on my waist, and his rough thumbs pressed into the satin.

He found the zipper and tugged.

It rose an inch. Then it caught, and his knuckles slid across my bare spine.

The skin under his hand went hot.

I watched him in the mirror. He was staring at the place where the green dress parted over my back.

His breath came in unevenly.

"Gabe."

"It's stuck," he said.

"It's not stuck. You're holding it."

His hand flattened against my back and didn't move.

I could feel his whole palm, hot through the thin gap in the fabric, and the pulse running in his wrist.

In the first life, I had known that hand for forty years.
