Chapter 10: The Sign-In Sheet

The nurse came back with a clipboard and the look of a woman who had been waiting a year to be asked.

"I didn't want to say anything in front of you before," she told Grandma. "Not without proof."

"Proof of what?" Grandma said.

"That you aren't going senile." The nurse held the clipboard out to me instead. "Read the top sheet."

It was a typed page on cream stationery, with a signature at the bottom.

Please do not mention Mrs. Thayer's address to Cadence Thayer. She is emotionally unstable and has asked the family for money more than once. Please do not admit her if she arrives unannounced. All of Mrs. Thayer's outgoing mail is to be handed to the Thayer family driver on Sundays, and he will post it.

It was signed Joan A. Thayer.

It was dated the week I came home.

I read it three times.

Grandma held out her hand, and I gave her the clipboard.

She read it once, slowly, and set it on the blanket.

"The driver came every Sunday," she said. "He's a kind man. He brought me peppermints."

"He took your letters to my mother," I said.

"He took them to somebody." Grandma's chin came up. "Nurse, I want the list of the Sundays."

"There's a visitor log by the door," the nurse said. "Every Sunday since June, he's signed in at four and out at four-ten. Ten minutes."
