Chapter 16: Grandma Takes a Seat

Nobody moved.

Savannah's fingers closed over the brooch.

"Grandma," she said, in her softest voice. "It's so good to see you. You gave it to me, remember? In the summer, at the lake."

"I remember the summer perfectly," Grandma said. "You asked to see my jewelry box, and I said yes, to be polite. You held that brooch for two minutes. Then you put it back and kissed my cheek."

"I didn't..."

"Nurse, the chair, please. I would like to sit at the table."

The nurse wheeled her down the length of the dining room.

Dad was on his feet with his napkin in his hand.

"Mother, you should not have come all this way. You haven't been well."

"I have been perfectly well. I have been bored." She stopped beside the empty chair at Savannah's right and looked at it. "Move your plate, Colton."

Colton moved his plate.

"Mother," Dad said again, lower. "We can talk about this privately."

"Phillip, I have been talking to you privately for a year. You told me three things. You said she wouldn't visit. You said she was embarrassed. You said it was best to leave her alone." Grandma folded her hands on her cane. "I would like to say them out loud in front of your sisters. See if they sound better."

The aunt who had let her in said, "Say them, Mother."

"Sit down, please," Mom said. She sounded tired. Then she heard herself, and she smiled at the table.

Dad's color had gone from red to something worse.

"She's confused," he said to the room. "She's eighty. She's been under a lot of strain."

"I am eighty," said Grandma. "I have also done the crossword every day since 1961, and I'd like to see you finish one."
