Chapter 7: The Landlord

The landlord's notice gave Luka ten days to remove "the unauthorized occupant and her stolen property."

"I don't have a stolen anything," I said.

"It doesn't have to be true," Luka said. "It has to be on letterhead."

He read it twice and set it on the counter. His phone rang before he could say more.

He looked at the screen, and his shoulders dropped half an inch.

"That's the firm," he said. "I have to take this."

He went into the hallway and pulled the door almost shut.

I heard everything anyway, because the walls were thin and the hallway had an echo.

"Yes, sir. No, sir. I'm not working on anything for the Thayers."

A pause.

"I know they're a client. Yes. I've seen the email from their general counsel."

A longer pause.

"No, sir. I haven't spoken to Mr. Thayer. I don't know him."

He was quiet for almost a minute, and when he came back in, his face had the careful blankness of a man holding something heavy and trying not to show it.

"What did they say?" I said.

"The partner I report to says the Thayers' lawyers have noticed that a member of the clinic is involved in a family dispute." He sat on the arm of the couch. "He'd like me to resolve it. For the firm's comfort."
