Chapter 16: Served in Public

The process server came to the foundation on Tuesday at ten, when every desk was full.

He was a polite young man in a gray raincoat.

"Diana Pellam?" he said, loud enough to carry. "You've been served."

The typing stopped.

I took the envelope, and I didn't go into my office.

I tore it open where I stood, in front of the second floor, and I read the first page.

"This is a petition to the county court," I said. "It asks a judge to find that I lack the capacity to manage my own affairs."

Nobody moved.

"It was signed by a doctor who has never examined me."

I turned the page.

"It says I've been confused for weeks, that I've made wild accusations about my own family's friends, and that I'm a danger to the foundation."

Across the floor, the young woman at the nearest desk, the one who had doubted me the day I turned Bryson down, put her hand over her mouth.

"It names two people as petitioners," I said. "Bryson Lasker, and Marcy Dolan."

Bryson was standing at the door of the glass conference room with his hands in his pockets.

He was not smiling.

"Diana, this is a private matter," he said.

"You served it in public."

"The court served it."

"Then the court can hear me say that my father's cardiologist found a stimulant in his blood on the night Marcy gave him a pill, and that I've never been confused a day in my life."

I held the papers up.

"I'll see all of you at the hearing. Anyone here who wants to come is welcome."

Then I walked into my father's office and shut the door.

My knees were shaking again.

Behind the glass, I watched the young woman pick up her phone, and I saw her look at me, and nod.
