Chapter 18: What He Saw
Darla went back under the knife at seven the next morning.
By then I had been awake all night in the family room on the fourth floor.
It had a sofa, a coffee machine and a window onto the helicopter pad.
Jerome had tucked Darla into her hospital bed, then come out and shut the door.
He sat down on the far end of the sofa and stared at his hands.
It was after midnight.
Neither of us had said a word in an hour.
"I never told you what I said," he said finally.
I turned my head.
"In the cab. I never told you."
"You don't have to."
"I do."
He kept his eyes on his palms.
"The call came in as Harbor Lane, smoke showing, juvenile possibly inside," he said. "No number."
"The neighbor who called said 'the end of the lane.' The dispatcher didn't have the house."
"I didn't know it was ours."
