Chapter 5: An Old Friend

I did not sleep.

At six in the morning I was in a booth at the diner on Route 9, with my duffel on the seat and a cup of coffee I had not touched.

The waitress had given me a look and walked away.

The whole town had seen the video by now.

On the TV above the counter, the morning news was showing a bull on its side in the dirt.

The caption said, *Soldier Opens Fire at County Rodeo*.

I watched it with the sound off.

The bell over the door rang.

"I figured you'd be here," a man said. "You always did like the pie."

I looked up.

Dell Faulk stood in the aisle with his cap in his hand.

He had been my spotter for two tours.

He had slept six feet from me in the dirt in places I will never describe.

He had lost weight, and he had on new boots.

"Brother," he said.

His voice cracked.

I stood, and he pulled me into a hug that squeezed the air out of me.

"God, it's good to see you," he said. "God, I'm sorry. I'm so sorry about all of it."

I held on for a moment.

He was the only person in that county I had not wanted to hit.

"Sit," I said.

He slid into the booth across from me.

"Brody's my little brother," he said. "I love him, and he's a damn fool. I didn't know about Cassidy. I swear to you, Wyatt, I didn't know until last night."

"The whole town knew," I said.

"The whole town doesn't talk to me," he said. "I've been up at the lake since I came home."
