Chapter 4: Saturday

On Saturday I walked into Silver Creek's town square on the arm of the Alpha King.

I wore my own green healer's tunic and my grandmother's silver comb in my braid.

Nobody had told me to dress up.

Nobody was going to tell me what to wear again.

Three hundred wolves stood around the stone circle under white ribbons.

When the black truck stopped, every one of them turned.

Then they saw who got out of it.

The whisper started at the back and rolled forward. The Alpha's second daughter. The rejected one. The banished one.

On the King's arm.

"Say the word and we leave," Alaric said under his breath.

"Stay," I said.

"Then I'm staying," he said.

I walked into the square with my chin up and my knees locked.

My father stood in the circle in his good grey suit.

He bowed to the King. Then he looked at me, and his jaw worked.

He didn't say my name.

My mother stood behind him in a blue dress. She looked at her shoes.

On the far side of the circle my sister waited in white lace.

Delphine had pinned her curls up. She held a small bouquet in both hands, and her other hand rested on her flat stomach.

Corbin stood beside her in a suit that was too big on him.

He had lost weight in a day. His skin was grey, and his eyes went straight to me.
