Chapter 17: Your Words, Not Mine
Abel took his hand out from under my shirt.
He didn't jump.
He did it slowly, and then he stepped half in front of me.
"Get away from her," Jarek said.
It was the Alpha voice, low and hard, aimed at Abel.
Inside the clinic I heard a chair scrape.
The pup started crying.
Abel didn't move.
"Off," Jarek said. "Now."
"I heard you the first time," Abel said. "I'm just not yours."
Jarek's face went blank with surprise.
A lone wolf answers to nobody.
"What are you doing here?" I asked.
"I followed your scent." Jarek's knuckles were white on the doorframe. "From the courthouse. Across the bridge."
"You followed me a whole day late."
"I had to get away from the lodge."
"Does Posy know you're here?"
His mouth tightened.
That was a no.
Behind him, the whole night clinic had gone quiet.
The laundress was standing at the front desk with a pie server in her good hand.
Jarek looked at Abel.
Then at me.
At my mouth, which I knew was red.
"He's a stray," he said. "He doesn't have a pack. He doesn't have a name anybody knows."
