Chapter 15: No Bones

Lucan's POV

"Go to the bend," I said to Rhea. "Stand where he can't see you."

"Why?"

"He won't say it with you in front of him."

She looked at me a long moment, and then she went and put her back against the rocks and folded her arms.

I walked to the tree.

Perrin watched me come, and some of the fear had left his face.

I crouched in the snow so my eyes were level with his.

"Say it plainly," I said.

"Ten years I've been waiting for you to ask."

"I'm asking."

"My trackers found her lodge in her third week there," Perrin said. "They saw the Ashfall mark cut into the gate post. I knew whose lodge it was and I knew you'd be back for her."

"And you laid the trap."

"On the north road. Silver wire under the leaf mold, and a pit." He smiled, and the chain rattled. "It was meant to hold you for a week. Your beta dug you out in a day."

I said nothing.

"My men were to burn the lodge and take her while you were stuck in the pass," he said. "The whole matter would be closed before you rode home. She ran before they reached her. That was her own doing."

I looked at him and kept my breathing slow and steady.

It was an old trick and a useful one.

Thirty days I had promised her.

One day I had been late.

For ten years I had told myself I had been late through bad luck, and for ten years I had believed it was the one flaw I could never fix.

It had been Perrin's men, with a spade and a coil of silver wire.

I thought of the thirty-first day.
