Chapter 18: The Price of the Bottle
I took the smallest girl back to bed myself, and then I went to find the old wolf.
"The guard at the cellar stair," I said. "Move him to the outer wall. Put two of ours on the cell."
"He said you allowed it, Alpha."
"I allow it no longer."
He did not ask why.
By morning the grey-cloaked man was on the east wall, in the wind, and two Bloodwood wolves sat on the cellar stair with their backs to the door.
It was not much, and it felt like less.
Corinna came on the fourth day.
I was in the yard, watching Bram and one of the twin girls teach a young Bloodwood wolf to throw a stone, when the gate-guard called out.
She walked through it alone.
Her cream cardigan was black with melted snow, and her boots had split at the toe.
She had no bracelets on her wrists.
The wolves in the yard stopped what they were doing, and nobody said a word.
Corinna crossed the yard and got down onto her knees at my feet.
"Get up," I said.
"I can't." She did not lift her head. "I tried to kneel to you in the hall and I couldn't, and I've wanted to every hour since."
"You can stand."
"I'd like to say it down here."
Her hair hung over her face.
I nodded to the old wolf, and the people in the yard drew back to give us room.
"Say it, then."
"The blue bottle," Corinna said. "It was wolfsbane. I knew when the cork came out in Lucan's hand and I said it was the wrong one because I had to say something."
"Who gave it to you?"
