Chapter 21: Rosamund's Letter
I broke the grey wax with my thumbnail and unfolded a single sheet.
It was addressed in the same strong slanting hand to the King of the Lycans.
It was dated the autumn before she died.
Osian took the lantern from the steward and held it for me.
His hand was perfectly steady, and the light shook.
Your Majesty, I am Rosamund Wrenfield, healer of Stonefall, and I am asking you to pay a debt.
You will not remember the name.
I sat three nights at your Queen's bed when your own physicians had given her up, and I kept her breathing until the fever turned.
I asked for nothing.
I ask now for one thing, and I ask it on behalf of a child of eight.
If the Stonefall pack ever turns on my daughter, take her in under your roof as a ward of the Throne.
Let no wolf ask whose she is.
I think the woman who nurses me now is killing me by inches, and I cannot prove it.
