Chapter 22: Forgiveness Asked
"Let him in," I said.
"Lenna," said Osian, very low. "You don't have to do this in front of the court."
"They watched me be erased in front of a pack. They can watch this."
The doors opened, and my father walked the length of the hall alone.
He had no cap, and no coat, and no brass keys on his belt.
His boots were white with lake dust to the knee.
When he stopped at the foot of the dais, I saw his hands.
Both were wrapped in rags, and the rags were dark.
The knuckles were split and swollen, and a fresh smear of grey stone dust was caught in every crack.
"What did you do?" I said.
"I did the thing I should have done five years ago," said my father.
His voice scraped.
"I went up to the white oak last night, with the chisel from my own bench, and I cut her name."
"R, O, S, A, M, U, N, D. Eight letters."
He swallowed.
"I'm not good with letters on stone. It took me till the moon was down."
"The S is crooked. I'm sorry."
Somebody in the court made a small sound.
