Chapter 10: Forty Witnesses

At nine o'clock the boardroom of Cabot Capital held seven directors, two lawyers and a woman crying into a tissue.

The woman was Sabine.

She sat at the end of the table in a cream dress with her mother's arm around her.

Lawrence sat on her other side, because someone on my board had thought it was fair to invite the family.

There were two cameras in the lobby, and I had walked past them with my head up.

Marin sat on my left. She had come straight from her own office with her laptop under her arm and hadn't been invited either.

"Weston," said the chairman of my board, a careful man who disliked scenes. "We've all seen the story. Before we vote, we'd like to hear from you."

"Then you'll hear it," I said.

I stood up.

"Sabine is ten weeks pregnant. I'm sorry for the strain she's under, and I mean that."

Her mother made a small noise.

"She says the baby is mine. It isn't."

The room reacted all at once.

"He's lying," Sabine said. "He was at the lake house."

"The lake house was in July," I said. "I wasn't there."

I nodded to my assistant, who stepped forward and set a folder in front of every director.

"The Singapore Capital Summit ran from the twenty-fourth of July to the sixth of August. I was on the panel on the twenty-eighth and the thirty-first. Here's the program, my boarding pass and my hotel folio."
