Chapter 10: Two Million
Lou did not say yes and he did not say no.
He listened to the lawyer talk for about a minute.
Then he said, "I'm home tomorrow morning. You can bring it to the house."
He shut the phone, and put it back on the shelf over the sink.
"Dad," Sean said. "Two million dollars."
"I heard."
"That's two million dollars."
"I know what it is," Lou said. "I've been trying to buy my kids a better place for twenty years, Sean."
He looked at me.
I opened my mouth, and he lifted a hand.
"I'm not asking you what to do," he said. "I'm asking you to be there when I do it."
On Sunday at ten the black SUV pulled up in front of the laundromat.
The lawyer in the gray suit got out with a leather folder.
The neighbors had come out early.
The laundry woman had her cart in the doorway again, and the two deli men leaned on the hood of a parked truck with coffees.
Lou stood on the stoop in the gray-lined jacket, and Cal and Sean stood on either side of him.
I stood one step above, where I could see the lawyer's hands.
"Mr. Boyle," the lawyer said pleasantly. "Thank you for seeing me. I have the agreement here."
"Read it out," Lou said.
"I'm sorry?"
"Read it out loud. So my kids can hear."
The lawyer's smile twitched.
He opened the folder.
"In exchange for two million dollars," he read, "Mr. Boyle acknowledges that Lena has been a member of the Thornquist family for seventeen years, accepts that the family is under no further obligation to her, and agrees not to speak to the press."
