Chapter 18: The Roof
Sam took the river road at ninety miles an hour with his phone propped on the dash.
On its screen, Kessling's red counter was still running, in the corner of a stream that had passed two hundred thousand viewers.
"Three minutes forty," Eli read out.
The man from Sublevel 3 sat in the back seat, gripping the headrest.
He had been hiding at Bess's clinic, and he had refused to stay behind tonight.
"I know the way down," he had said. "You don't."
"Then we skip the front door," Sam said.
He drove the truck straight over the curb behind the Corwin Institute, through the gap where the old dock shutter hung from one hinge, and stopped at the loading bay with the bumper against the wall.
The bay was empty.
Every guard who might have stopped them was at the Deshler or at the front gate, watching a different door.
Eli swiped his dead keycard at the linen lift.
The card reader blinked red.
"Move," Sam said, and had the panel off with a pocketknife before the light had gone out.
The lift dropped.
When the doors opened on Sublevel 3, the corridor lights were already flashing amber, and two guards in gray stood between them and the white room.
The nearest one reached for his belt.
Jo had his wrist before the holster cleared.
He locked rigid, with his mouth open.
The second guard fired, and the shot rang off the steel wall a foot from Eli's head.
Eli hit him low and shoved him against the glass.
He took the guard's gun and threw it down the corridor, and Sam finished the job with a fire extinguisher.
