Chapter 11: Not Careful

The guest room had a narrow bed, a quilt, and a lamp with a crooked shade.

Elliot shut the door behind us and turned the lock.

The click was very quiet.

I stood in the middle of the room in my green dress, and he stood with his back against the door, looking at me.

"Come here," I said.

"I'm trying to remember how to move."

"Try harder."

He crossed the room in three steps.

He kissed me against the bedpost, hard, with his hands in my hair.

The pins came loose one by one and dropped onto the quilt.

I tore his shirt open. A button hit the floor and rolled.

"Rose."

"I'm not sorry."

"I wasn't going to ask you to be."

He turned me around.

His mouth went to the back of my neck.

His fingers drew the zipper of my dress down my spine, one tooth at a time.

The green fabric dropped around my feet.

I stood in my underwear with my palms flat on the bedpost, and he stopped breathing behind me.

"God," he said.

"Don't say anything. Touch me."

His hands came around my ribs, and then they came up.

He cupped my breasts through the lace and thumbed my nipples, and I arched back into his chest and heard myself moan.

He was hard against my ass, through his trousers. I pressed back, and he swore into my shoulder.

"Slowly," he said, in a voice that was not slow at all.

"No."

I turned around and shoved his shirt off his shoulders.

He had a long, lean chest, with a little gray in the hair, and a scar under his ribs I had never seen.

"What's that?"

"Skiing. Later."

I put my mouth on it.

He made a rough sound and put his hands in my hair.

I worked my way down, kissing across his stomach, my fingers at his belt.

"Rose, if you do that, I won't last."

"Then I'll do it again later."

I unfastened him and pulled him free.

He was thick and heavy and flushed, and he jerked in my hand when I stroked him once, root to tip.
