Chapter 18: The Sidewalk
"Is he still there?" I asked.
"He's sitting on a bench in the hall with his hat in his hands. The deputy's making copies." Lettie blew her nose loudly. "He told them about the lie too. Out loud, right at the counter. He said, 'I told her I said no and I paid it anyway.'"
"Why would he tell them that?"
"Because the deputy asked why the receipt was in a drawer, and my brother can't lie worth a damn twice in one month."
I sat down on the kitchen floor with my back against the refrigerator.
"Lettie. Does Brady know?"
"He called Brady from the truck before he went in. I heard his half." She was quiet a second. "He said, 'I'm going to the sheriff. I'm telling you first so you hear it from me.' Then he hung up and sat there ten minutes before he could get out."
I couldn't say anything.
"I'm not telling you to call him," Lettie said. "I'm telling you what happened. That's all."
